Counting of nesting turtles and protection of nesting areas
The sandy beaches of southern Japan constitute one of the world's most important turtle breeding grounds. In particular, Japan is the only Loggerhead breeding area in the North Pacific. In order to determine changes in turtle populations, it is important to count turtle nests. It is also important to check whether eggs are hatching safely. These activities are the only way to understand the sea turtle situation. During the breeding season, surveys are conducted throughout the night on the beaches of southern Japan.
